Postgraduate Accommodation

The University has reserved various unfurnished properties close to UWA for full-time Post Graduate Research students studying to at least PhD, Higher and Professional Doctorate or Masters level (see below for eligible programmes). Post Graduate non-research programmes (i.e. coursework only programmes) are not eligible.

These properties are primarily offered to applicants based on family circumstances and financial hardship/need. Postgraduate students studying for a Doctorate Degree usually have priority in selection.

The details of these properties are:

Unit type	$ per week*
- Bedsitter/studio units at 32 Caporn street	up to $210 per week
- one bedroom units	up to $300 per week
- two bedroom units	up to $360 per week
- two bedroom houses	up to $400 per week

*These rental prices are a guide only and may vary from time to time.

If you would like to be considered for posrt graduate accommodation, you must submit an application through the Housing Office.

It is our policy that the one bedroom units are suitable for singles, couples or three person families with one child up to the age of 10 years only. Please note that children must not be older than 10 years of age for a one bedroom unit.

Eligibility

Postgraduate units are reserved for application by full-time postgraduate research students*. Part-time programmes and non-research programmes (i.e. coursework only programmes) are not currently eligible.

* Postgraduate programmes in order of merit:

1. Higher Doctorate
2. Doctor of Philosophy (the PhD) including combined degree variants
3. Professional Doctorate
4. Master Degree by Research (thesis only)
5. Master's Degree by Research (creative work)
6. Master's Degrees by Research (thesis and creative work)
7. Master's Degree by Thesis and Coursework

Subsidized rental accommodation is not normally available to other postgraduate students, or to undergraduate students.

All higher education courses are accorded a course type code. Higher doctorates are classified 01; doctorates by research as classified 02; master’s by research as classified 03. Only those categorised as 01,02 and 03 are eligible for application for post graduate accommodation. A listing of UWA research degrees classified 01, 02 or 03 is available from the SIMS Group.

Consideration is also given to family and financial circumstances.

Students who are not currently eligible to apply for post graduate accommodation should make use of the Housing Database and/or the links to other accommodation providers and search sites on this website.

Only a few vacancies will arise each year and demand for these vacancies is extremely high. There is always a waiting list of applicants for Post Graduate Housing. At the beginning of 2009 we had more than 100 applications on the waiting list; some waiting more than 18 months without being accommodated. We therefore recommend that you make every effort to find alternative accommodation and do not solely rely on your application for Post Graduate housing being successful.

All UWA owned residential property is currently managed by Caporn Young.

Applying for a Post Graduate Unit

To apply for a Post Graduate unit, please download the application form. Once completed, you should submit this to the Housing Officer in Student Services. Please hand in your form at Student Support Reception on the 2nd floor of the Guild Building South.

Please make your selection carefully when applying for a unit, as if you are accommodated and you change your mind and want to move to a different unit, there is no scope to move without reapplying and rejoining the waiting list.

If you are successful in securing a post graduate unit, you have obligations under the Residential Tenancies Act (1987). Please make sure you read your Tenancy Agreement carefully.
