Faculty of MDHS

First Year MDHS - Personal and Professional Development

Delivery of the PPD lectures to first year medicine students represents one of the longest partnerships with a Faculty for the STUDYSmarter team.  The PPD program is managed by Erica Yeh and sessions in the past have covered academic writing, referencing, note-taking and exam skills although more recently they have focused on the first essay to be submitted by the students.  As such the face-to-face lectures  cover the expectations of essay writing and referencing using the Vancouver system.  Other study skills topics are now covered in the on-line modules developed through the B.R.A.I.N. project (see below)

B.R.A.I.N.

The BRAIN project (Beginning Researcher And Information Networks) is a series of 4 WebCT modules develped by the Faculty of MDHS with materials written by Dr Lisa Cluett.  The modules cover Essay Writing, Using the Literature, Note-taking and Exam Strategies and each includes a step-by-step guide for students that incorporates resources, audio, tips and templates as well as discipline specific examples and content.  The project was managed by Catherine Clark and also included content previously delivered to the students by Monique Fountain (reference librarian)

Health Science

The Health Science program includes a range of integrated Learning Skills sessions covering topics such as public speaking, research skills, exam strategies, critical thinking and acaedmic writing. These lectures and workshops are delivered by Dr Lisa Cluett in collaboration with the Health Science teaching team of Justine Leavy, Dr Rachel Moorin and Dr Jane Heyworth.

In 2008, we launched a new project in which the STUDYSmarter team delivered a series of tutor training sessions aimed at improving the teaching of critical thinking to students.  LLRS developed the curriculum for the student workshops that were then run by tutors, as well as resources and assistance for giving helpful feedback to students on their critical analytical skills.

Postgraduate Health Professional Education

A session on Study Skills Training is delivered to the cohort of postgraduate students enrolled in the Health Professional Education programs.  The session covers topics of returning to learning, assignment writing, critical thinking, effective reading and referencing.  This session was developed and delivered by Dr Lisa Cluett by invitation from the Director of Postgraduate Studies and Deputy Head of the Education Centre Sandra Carr

Institute for Child Health Research (ICHR)

Following requests for Postgraduate Research students, the Telethon ICHR requested a series of workshops on Public Speaking and Seminar presentations.  These sessions cover topics such as structuring a purposeful seminar, engaging the audience, uses (and abuses) of PowerPoint, overcoming nerves and speaking at conferences.  These sessions have been developed and delivered by Dr Lisa Cluett (following an invitation from Kathy Whipp) and Lisa also delivers feedback and recommendations to particpants on their speaking skills

Orientation for incoming Rural Medicine and Dentistry Students

Part of the welcome and orientation for 'rural' first year medicine and dentistry students is a presentation from Dr Lisa Cluett about expectations of learning at UWA, challenges facing med/dent students and an overview of the skills needed and services available.
