Make a list of the signs and symptoms of your illness or problem. Remember to give information about when the symptoms began and how they have progressed. Be prepared to share information about past and current illnesses, hospitalisations, medications and known allergies. You can request to see either a male or female doctor. It is important that you feel comfortable talking to your doctor. You may be asked about alcohol, tobacco and drug use (prescribed and recreational). You may also be asked about your sexual history or pregnancy. It is important to your doctor that you be as open and honest as possible. Our doctors do understand that these questions may be uncomfortable and would not discuss them if it was unneccessary. If you are embarrassed by a doctor's questions or by the way you were examined, please tell us. We understand that everyone comes from different backgrounds and we do not wish to cause embarassment or offence. Ask questions! If you don't understand the doctors advice, are unsure about the treatment options or have any other concerns you should speak openly with your doctor. If you have difficulty speaking or understanding English you can bring along a friend or family member. We can also arrange to have an interpreter present, however please request this service at the time of making your appointment. Remember your consultation is confidential between the doctor or nurse and yourself. |
